FC Barcelona vs. Elche CF Match Review

FC Barcelona 5 - 0 Elche Fc

FC Barcelona begin the 2026-27 season with a emphatic 5-0 win away against Elche CF. For any normal team, one would think a 5-0 scoreline would mean the team was absolutely dominant during that match. However the first half for Barcelona looked to be quite worrying. Barcelona made Elche look like a great counter attack and build through the middle of the field team. The first half, Barcelona's midfield was often dispossessed either of their own bad passes or simple positional mistakes. Elche easily ran through the midfield, lucky for Barcelona Gerard Martin and Joan Garcia were able to make vital stops to keep the match a clean sheet. Offensively, it was great to watch Raphinha back to his normal self, Adeyemi keep his composure in front of goal, which Barcelona has needed for a while, and Gordon unselfish play in front of goal. Let's talk about the most clear problems of the match. Lamine Yamal lackluster outing. While I won't read a ton into this match because of it being the first of the season and Yamal not resting much after last years injury then world cup and now La Liga start, it did not look great. I'll start with a positive, the trivela pass to Raphinha was amazing and I have to give that praise. However, he did not seem to take control of the match like we can see him do. He played very passive, did not take many players on and overall looked to be lacking the intensity Raphinha, Fermin, Adeyemi, and Gordon all provided. That's what I'll leave it at for now. It's the first game, I'm sure his injury is healing, but I don't believe that was a great outing overall.

I will say it's a breath of fresh air to see Barcelona have a direct left winger. Adayemi and Gordon both were able to create linkup play and burst forward with speed and attack directly on goal. Don't get me wrong, having Raphinha on the left wing is great, and I really enjoying watching him play, but teams often don't expect him to be direct and so Lamine or Torres last season would be focused on, leading to less chances. This match Adeyemi and Gordon both were true wingers, defending and attacking with speed and composure leading to 3 goal involvements between the two of them.

I have long critiqued Gerard Martin, I do think he needs more time to develop as a substitute and learn from an experienced and established centre-back. However, this match he seemed composed and made vital efforts stopping Elche from scoring. I am hesitant to give him more props than he deserves. It's a La Liga, against not a particularly strong team. However he played quite well this match, I'm looking forward seeing him develop and hopefully playing better in Champions League fixtures.

I was also looking forward to the start of Marc Bernal, with Frenkie De Jong and Rodri are injured, he seemed poised to take the lead of our midfield and become Barcelona's stellar pivot. However, this match showed he still needs much more experience. Before his injury last year he was playing very well, and seemed very comfortable in his position. In today's match he seemed to be rushing through his progressions, instead of slowing down and dictating the tempo of the game, he rushed forward often making an innaccurate pass or gets dispossesed by a defender, leaving the defense to fend against a counter attack. Another young player to look out for in the pre-match was Xavi Espart. He has played very well in the youth teams and had a lot of praise coming into the match. In the first half of the match his work rate was relentless, chasing after opposing players to recover the ball, often times of his own accord. It seemed like he was rushing his play. He'd get the ball back, and instantly rush forward, unwaware of the opposing players locations, becoming dispossessed. He looks to have a lot of potential and I can see the reasoning for his inclusion in the starting lineup. His second half was a lot more calm, more focused on defensive stability. Gavi was also a player I was quite surprised started the match. He did not play much for Spain and did not look particularly good this match. Similar to Xavi Espart, he was quite rushed in his play, and while I enjoy his tenacity, he's often reckless in his tackles, leading to injuries.

I did want to adress a few things from Hansi Flick. I like that he's brining back the mentality of Barcelona is one of the best clubs in the world. Being a player from La Masia isn't enough anymore. For example, Alejandro Balde, while he did play very well for a period, benching Jordi Alba, that shouldn't be seen as something crazy. Alba was at the end of his career and many defenders could play better than him. Once Balde stopped performing well, he began to start lose Flick's trust, and has not improved to where he once was. That's just the reality of being a Barcelona player, if you can't perform at your best, especially in the Champions League, you cannot be in the starting lineup. Overall, shaky first half from Barcelona, improved in the second half, but need to see more from this midfield.
